The short version

The CP3 triple made the MT-09's reputation and the current generation finally gave it a chassis to match: 119 hp, 193 kg wet, cornering electronics, and a front end reviewers call properly composed at last. Cruise control and a quickshifter are standard, and the valve check is a distant 42,000 km away.

Where it wins

  • CP3 triple delivers 93 Nm with the best soundtrack in the class
  • Quickshifter and cruise control standard at under 11,000 EUR
  • 42,000 km valve intervals keep the drama on the road, not the invoice

Where it loses

  • Rear shock is a step behind the excellent fork when pushed
  • 14 litre tank at real-world thirst means frequent fuel stops

The full review

The CP3 engine is the whole argument

Reviewers have spent a decade trying to describe the CP3 triple without using the word character, and failing. The current 890 cc version blends torque and power into one continuous shove, and testers call it eternally playful yet completely unintimidating, an engine that obeys whatever mood you bring to it.

The press consensus on the latest generation is that the MT-09 stopped being a one-trick hooligan and became a complete motorcycle: still happy to loft the front on demand, now equally happy to hold a fast line while it does.

A chassis that finally keeps up

The recurring line in reviews of this generation is about the front end, which testers describe as far more composed under pressure than any MT-09 before it, with a fully adjustable KYB fork that rewards setup time. The riding position sharpened without turning hostile, and cornering ABS with lean-sensitive traction control watches over the inevitable.

The quickshifter is standard and so, from 2025, is cruise control, which at this price with this engine makes the spec sheet read like a typo from a class above.

MT-09 or 990 Duke

The KTM brings a stiffer chassis and slightly more measured manners; the Yamaha answers with the better soundtrack, a 2,480 EUR saving and the CP3's famous 42,000 km valve intervals. Testers who ride both tend to respect the KTM and buy the Yamaha.

The honest criticisms hold: the rear shock runs out of sophistication before the fork does, and the 14 litre tank empties quickly when the engine is used as intended, which it always is. Neither has ever stopped anyone signing, and the sales charts prove it.

Compare the MT-09

Frequently asked

Is the Yamaha MT-09 A2 licence legal?
No. The Yamaha MT-09 makes 119 hp (87.5 kW), and EU rules only allow A2 restriction of bikes up to 70 kW. This one needs the full A licence.
How fast is the Yamaha MT-09?
Our power-to-weight model estimates 0 to 100 km/h in about 2.9 seconds, from 119 hp moving 193 kg wet. That is an estimate for comparison, not a measured time, and it is labelled that way everywhere on this site.
What is the fuel range of the Yamaha MT-09?
About 280 km on paper: a 14 litre tank against a claimed 5 L/100 km. Ride it with enthusiasm and the maths gets worse, never better.
How tall is the seat on the Yamaha MT-09?
The Yamaha MT-09 seat sits at 825 mm, which is about average for the class, manageable for most inseams with a little practice. At 193 kg wet, weight does the rest of the talking at a standstill.
How much does the Yamaha MT-09 cost?
€10,519 list price in the EU market this site scores. It earns 11.8 of 20 value points on our formula, which weighs price against equipment and running costs.
